The White Swan is an attractive ideally situated building but one which clearly differs from the typical 18th century inn. After the land closure of 1763, Jonathan Acklom, squire of Wiseton decided to rebuild the hall and improve the estate his family had held since the reign of Charles II. Drakeholes (for as it was originally called Dragon Holes) and it was there that Acklom built the finest of his Follies: The White Swan. Its original appearance was that of a rather serer symmetrical, Palladian-style villa, complete with central tower looking over a shallow valley towards the hall (now hidden behind a curtain of trees). In over two hundred years much has changed. Acklom's hall was demolished and replaced in 1960 the original lodges (opposite the inn) are derelict. Most of the other buildings survive and are listed for preservation. The White Swan’s classicism has been mellowed by time additions and Virginia creeper, yet still a reminder of those most un-foolish of 18th century follies.
